General Surgery


Our mission is to graduate independent, skilled, professional, and specialized general surgeons who have potential to become leaders in General Surgery.

Our vision is to achieve an excellent standard in surgical training and education and to be recognized as one of the leading surgical training programs in the region.

The aim of this program is to graduate an independent general surgeon. At the end of every rotation, the residents should be able to:
1. Medical Knowledge
- Demonstrate appropriate knowledge and skills accordingly
- Evidence - based practice
- Update him/herself with the latest in the field
- Understands own limitations
2. Patient Care
- Advise patients on relevant matters regarding pre op, intra procedure and postoperative recovery following surgery (with regards to joining work, diet, exercise, swimming or any specific advise).
- Discuss health issues (ie: when to drive, when to exercise, dietary advice)
- Join in on family meetings
- Organize convalescence early on during patient’s hospitalization
- Screen familial cancer
- Promote healthy life style, disease prevention and infection control
- Discuss discharge advice appropriately
3. Professionalism
- Dress appropriately
- Attend to duties punctually
- Show compassion towards his patient
- Display teamwork and respect for colleagues
- Maintain patient confidentiality
- Display honesty at all times
- Show enthusiasm in healthcare service
- Work responsibly and shows dependability
- Show humility by requesting expert and appropriate help from colleagues whenever needed.
4. Interpersonal & Communication Skills
- Write accurate, concise and appropriate notes.
- Present consults verbally in an understandable way.
- Communicate effectively and empathetically with the patient.
- Discuss treatment plans with the head or assistant head nurse (Multisource Feedback/360 degree).
- Ensure that all team members understand the treatment plan for individual patients.
- Lead a team effectively and efficiently.
- Demonstrate an understanding of cost-effectiveness in patient management.
- Demonstrate time management.
- Organize the monthly call schedule.
- Manage theatre lists.
- Supervise interns’ daily activities in the team.
- Supervise junior residents’ daily activities in the team.
- Take part in organizing various CME activities.
- Organize monthly mortality and morbidity, and Pathology meeting.
5. System Based Practice
- Interact with consultants and colleagues.
- Discuss cases with emergency staff.
- Interact and discuss cases with radiology staff.
- Interact positively in a multidisciplinary group in the context of patient care.
6. Practice Based Learning & Improvement
- Participate in Journal Clubs.
- Involve himself/herself in teaching residents.
- Involve himself/herself in Research and Audit
- Publish scholarly activities and present in national and international scientific conferences.
- Participate in developing Minimally Invasive System (MIS) skills by attending | simulation courses.

Duration of the Residency Training Program

Five (5) years are divided into 65 (13 x 5) blocks of 4 weeks of residency training of which 54 blocks are general surgical rotation. In addition, the residents must attend all OMSB core curriculum workshops, and essential surgical skills courses: ATLS–Advanced Trauma Life Support, BSSC-Basic Surgical Skills Course, Laparoscopic Course, ACLS-Advanced Cardiac Life Support Course, and Vascular Anastomosis. We highly recommend the residents to attend and present in international conferences, in general surgery: ACS-American College of Surgeons, ASC-Australasian Surgical Congress, ASGBI-Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland; Toronto Update in General Surgery, ELSA-Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons of Asia Conference and SAGES-Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons. Residents must fulfill a minimum of 75% of each rotation and must attend 75% of the weekly didactic teaching sessions. They are allowed a maximum of 4 weeks of annual leave per year.

SUMMARY OF CLINICAL ROTATIONS:

Junior Rotations (R1 & R2) 26 blocks divided into:

- 11 blocks general surgery 
(HPB-SQUH/RH, UGI (RH), Breast/oncology (SQUH/RH)
Colorectal (RH), head/neck surgery & endocrine surgery (SQUH/AlNahda)
- 3 blocks pediatric surgery(SQUH/RH)
- 3 blocks trauma surgery (SQUH)
- 2 blocks vascular surgery (RH/SQUH)
- 2 blocks endoscopy(SQUH/RH)
- 2 blocks cardiothoracic surgery(SQUH)
- 2 blocks surgical critical care (RH/SQUH/KH)
- 1 block elective (Radiology-KH/RH/SQUH), Plastic Surgery(KH), Urology(RH)

Senior Rotations (R3 & R4):

Consists 26 blocks divided into:
- 2 blocks general surgery 
(HPB-SQUH/RH, UGI (RH),Colorectal (RH), Breast (RH/SQUH) 
- 3 blocks general surgery focusing on laparoscopy
(HPB-SQUH/RH, Colorectal-RH, UGI-RH)
- 1 block elective (laparoscopic course in India)
- 2 block Transplant Surgery (abroad) 
- 3 blocks regional general surgery (Interior hospital)
- 3 blocks trauma surgery (SQUH)
- 3blocks endocrine surgery (RH/SQUH)
- 3 blocks oncology surgery (SQUH)
- 3 blocks vascular surgery (SQUH/RH)
- 3 blocks surgical research

Chief Year Rotations (R5):

Consists 13 blocks divided into:
- 10 blocks general surgery (SQUH,RH,AFH) 
- 3 blocks laparoscopic surgery(SQUH,RH)

Royal Hospital, Sultan Qaboos University hospital and Armed Forces Hospital, 

2. Regional Hospital for other Rotations and/or Electives:
Regional Surgery Nizwa Hospital, Regional Surgery Sohar Hospital, Regional Surgery Salalah.

Evaluation and Assessment:

1. In-Training Assessment Report (Residents Evaluation) - Per Block
2. MINI-CEX evaluation - Minimum 4 per Academic year
3. Presentation Evaluation Form - Minimum 4 per Academic year
4. Multisource Feedback (360 degree) - Minimum 13 per Academic year
5. Evaluation of Procedural Skills - Minimum 1 per block
6. Case-based Dicussion - Minimum 4 per Academic year
