Biochemistry


Clinical Biochemistry encompasses both practical laboratory and clinical skills. The curriculum complies with the Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board recommendation of the Oman Medical Specialty Board (OMSB) that will be integrated to produce a coordinated training program.

To set standards for training of medical graduates to attain a competency level of consultant in Clinical Biochemistry during a period of five years.

The Clinical Biochemistry Training Program will develop and prepare graduates to lead a full and comprehensive high quality clinical biochemistry service in the hospital.

The purpose of the curriculum of Clinical Biochemistry (Chemical Pathology) Residency Program is to set the standards required by the OMSB and recognized by other international bodies (e.g. Royal College of Pathologists in UK, Australia, Canada and Ireland). This will ensure that trainees are fully prepared to lead a full Clinical and Biochemical Laboratory service at consultant level. The educational program provides the means to:
Experience of laboratory practice to enable the trainee to attain an understanding of the:
Ø Biochemical process associated with pathological change
Ø Rationale for investigation and treatment of disease and the interpretation of test results
-Experience of the diagnostic techniques required to become technically competent in practical work, and to master the underlying analytical and clinical principles.
-Gain knowledge of the metabolic changes that occur in disease.
-Gain knowledge of specialist areas such as Pediatric Clinical Biochemistry and Toxicology, in order to be able to provide specialist advice.
-Communicate and teach skills necessary for effective practice. Provide specialist opinion in Clinical Biochemistry.
-Lead a department providing an effective service.
-Experience research, projects and critical assessment of published work so as to contribute in a team and individually to the development of the service.
-Develop life-long habits of reading, literature searches, consultation with colleagues, attendance at scientific meetings, and the presentation of scientific work that are essential for Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
-Experience the practice of clinical governance and audit (specialist and multidisciplinary) through evaluation of practice against the standards of evidence-based medicine, which underpin biochemistry practice.
At the end of training, the Resident should have achieved competence in all the objectives specified in Clinical Biochemistry training. Resident should also have passed FRCPath Part 1 and attained a series of successful Record of In-Training Assessment.

DURATION OF TRAINING PROGRAM

A five years duration would normally be required to satisfactorily complete the OMSB Clinical Biochemistry curriculum to the required depth and breadth. The resident will have 12 months of training with one-month vacation in each year. The resident may not progress to the next stage of training until he/she satisfactorily completed the preceding stage. Residents who do not meet the requirements set by the program and the OMSB for completion of training and certification are allowed to have extension of training to fulfill those requirements as per the OMSB rules and regulations.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS OMSB GENERAL ADMISSION CRITERIA:

1. The applicant must be a holder of Medical Degree in Medicine and Surgery or equivalent from a recognized university.

2. Must have completed a year of internship.

3. Must be of good conduct and medically fit for the specialty.

4. Must provide three letters of recommendation from three consultants with whom he/she has worked confirming his/her ability & capability of training.

5. Must submit a letter of approval from his/her sponsor confirming permission to join the OMSB specialty training program on a full time basis for the entire period of training.

6. Must pass both the OMSB selection exam and the interview.

7. The Education Committees of the specialty may add other conditions, oral or written exams, or tests for admission as approved by the OMSB. The resident must fulfill the additional conditions set by the program.

8. The applicants are selected as per OMSB rules and regulations.

 

CLINICAL BIOCHEMISTRY SPECIALTY ADMISSION CRITERIA:

1. An applicant is eligible for entry to Clinical Biochemistry training program following satisfactory completion of the OMSB rules and regulations.

2. Selection of a resident will be achieved following an interview by the OMSB Clinical Biochemistry Education Committee which includes an oral exam.
